Unconditional Love

The concept of unconditional love may be something that many of us are unfamiliar with.  I looked it up on Wikipedia and it is defined as affection without any limitations. NO LIMITATIONS!! Meaning that there is nothing you can do to minimize this love.

“There must be a stronger foundation than mere friendship or sexual attraction. Unconditional love, agape love, will not be swayed by time or circumstances. ” ― Stephen Kendrick, The Love Dare

It’s no wonder that we are a little confused about unconditional love when our culture is focused on showing images of romantic love (eros) or lust in overwhelming abundance. Almost every movie depicts a couple falling in love in two hours and then living happily ever after, or not.

Real life is rarely without the normal ebbs and flows. It’s no wonder we dream of finding this same type of rose-colored-glasses type of love.  The problem with this type of love is that in most cases it is not sustainable or lasting. True and lasting love, unconditional love, takes time.  It must be nurtured over time. It requires honesty and integrity. It is there when you are sick and have lost all of your hair from chemo, at your worst in the morning before you brush your teeth, when you put on a little weight, or when your body changes from having children and things are not where they once were.  It’s especially there when you need someone to just hold you because you are missing your Mom who passed away more than a decade ago.  This type of love requires you to go through some challenges and come out on the other side, more committed than ever to one another.  It’s there even if you disagree on the debate concerning gun control, you still can show love and respect to one another.  Unconditional love, NEVER changes.

Isn’t that awesome??

This song by Musiq Soulchild illustrates it beautifully. Watch…

During the past month, my pastor has been preaching about love.  Not the fleeting type but the divine love described in I Corinthians 13:4-8.

[info]4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. [/info]

I love that.  Love never fails.  LOVE NEVER FAILS!!

I recently spent some time with a few of my sister-friends who are going through divorce. It has been painful to watch what they have had to endure. We have prayed together, laughed and even cried. But what I want them to know is that they are not alone.

As hard as it has been to lose their marital relationship, I know they know that they have the unconditional love of sister-friends who will be there for them no matter what!! Whether he left you or you left him, it doesn’t matter. What matters is how do you heal and move forward?  I said all of this to let you know that until human unconditional love finds you, that there is a divine love that will envelope you and comfort you during this painful season in your life. What I do know, is that this too shall pass.
