Focus On What Really Matters

“At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought but what we built; not what we got but what we shared; not our competence but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters.”

There is so much noise in the world. Everywhere you look there are so many things competing for your attention and your time, that it’s sometimes difficult for us to focus on what matters most. It can be hard to get still so you can listen to your own thoughts.

I had several big take-aways from last year, one of my biggest was that it is important for me to spend quiet time with myself so I can really hear God speak to me about where I need to spend my time and use my talent. My most creative times happened when the house was quiet and I could focus on what I was holding inside. What I know for sure is within each of you also lies many special gifts and talents. Everyone is creative in some way. Your mission is to figure out how to manifest your creativity in a way that serves the world.

Some tips to help you focus on what truly matters:

1. Shut out distractions: Don’t log onto any social media, don’t even look at your stream. No music either. Music has a way of evoking emotions and they trigger other thoughts. No television either. Television also sends your thoughts in other directions.

2. Do an activity that stimulates your creativity: An example of this would be to create a vision board. This is a great way to create a visual reminder of everything that you want to manifest. When the noise starts again you won’t forget all that you want to create.

3. Are you being authentic with the areas of your life that your need to improve? This work takes courage. I want you to tell yourself the truth about the five key areas of your life: Spiritual, Work, Relationships, Health, and Financial. Where can you make improvements? Sit down and write down how you want to make changes in these five key areas this year. You can add it to your vision board mentioned in step 2. I found this to be a great way to keep my goals in front of me. A great digital tip is to take a picture of your vision board with your Smart phone so you can carry it with you everywhere you go.

For Reflection: Do you spend time daily just listening to your own thoughts without any distractions? (No social media, no music, television, friends, family, etc.)

Homework/Journal Assignment: Write down on a piece of paper or in your journal your answers to the questions below: What are your special gifts? Are you using your gifts? What is holding you back from using your specials gifts? What can you do this year to move you closer to using your gifts?

Now go set aside a time for you to be still and just listen to your own thoughts.
